anonymous asked:

Hi! I Love your birdperson sculpt! Could you do a quick tutorial on how you made the wings ? They look absolutely beautiful!

Hi anon! This ask have been sitting a while now, sorry! But yes, I can. I don’t know how helpful it will be if you’re not familiar with zbrush, but here goes:

I started out with some thinking about how I wanted the wings to look. General shape, and how to make them in 3d, and so on. I knew I wanted to make them mostly out of separate feathers, something I was too intimidated to try during my last attempt. Back then I tried to sculpt the feathers out of large shapes, basically. It didn’t turn out so well imo:

Looks flat and sort of wobbly, and doesn’t have that crisp feather feel. And I didn’t even make a proper alula.

So instead I did some sketches on the wing anatomy and the different feather groups

And then I sculpted a wing base in zbrush, and covered it with feathers (another subtool). I sculpted these because making that many feathers would just be awful, and they’re supposed to be fairly smooth anyway. Plus I added some separate small feathers to break it up later.

Then I made feathers! I mostly followed this excellent tutorial: http://www.zbrushguides.com/feathers-with-nanomesh/

I needed feathers that didn’t have a too high polycount, and that I also could subdivide and sculpt on later, so this was a really good way to do them.

I made a whole wing feather set, plus a bunch of smaller feathers to place wherever I wanted. Here’s a good feather ref site: https://www.featherbase.info/sv/home

Then it was time to place them and sculpt details.

Each feather group (primaries, secondaries, primary coverts, and so on) is a separate subtool, with each feather a separate polygroup, so it was easy to move them around and sculpt each one.

And after that I put on some polypaint!

And now they’re done :)

So I moved and everything got stalled. But then I watched Russian Doll and omg its amazing! Long story short i decided to try to make and print a toy called #NadiaPotato

So here is my wip.

Lets just say the hair, omg the hair is killing me!
