My pet opossum Monster snoozing in my lap

PSA: Wildlife rehabber here, just a reminder that:

1: Opossums do not carry rabies, their body temps are too low and the chances of them actually getting rabies is extremely rare. (Same applies with distemper and various other viral diseases)

2: Opossums are immune to pit viper venom. Bites from rattlesnakes, cottonmouths and copperheads do nothing to them. What’s better? They love eating snakes.

3: They are one of the biggest benefactors against ticks. They eat lots of ticks…rats, mice, bugs, snakes (as mentioned above). See where I’m going with this? Pest control!

4: “Playing Opossum” is involuntary. They basically faint from stress and their body stimulates death to dissuade predators! They would much prefer to run away and not engage in fights. As such, it is extremely rare for them to attack pets or humans, only doing so if cornered.

5: They are North America’s only marsupial. They are nature’s clean up crew and pest control. They are naturally clean animals.

So please, be kind to opossums! They’re beneficial!!

Wild Animal High Desert Bighorn Sheep Male Ram

Phillip Island, Victoria

We drove down to Phillip Island and visited the Wildlife Reserve. It’s devastating what’s happening to wildlife across the country at the moment, so we felt truly privileged to be able to get close to these beautiful animals.

Reposted from @mbari_news The fangtooth, or ogrefish, has extra-long, sharp teeth and a face only a mother could love. 💕

This fierce-looking fish actually gets no bigger than the average adult human hand. The fangtooth is found in meso- and bathy-pelagic waters worldwide. Dark skin and scales provide camouflage in these dim ocean depths, assisting them with catching prey (fish, shrimp, and squid) and avoiding hungry predators (tuna and marlin). Their prominent lateral line system detects water movement and compensates for poor eyesight and low light conditions. The fangtooth has been spotted just eight times in the past 30 years of MBARI ROV expeditions.

Through the Blizzard by David & Shiela Glatz
Via Flickr:
After a day of shooting in West Yellowstone, we were returning to the lodge. We encountered a herd of about 30 Bison (Bison bison) on the road, and the snow was really coming down. This young bull was leading the herd. We got very low and used telephoto lenses to compress the distance. Through the dumping snow and howling wind, we made eye contact with this magnificent animal. A true connection and a moment we will not forget.

Downhill Bison by David & Shiela Glatz

We spotted this huge male Bison on the top of a hill. When a pickup truck dislodged him from his spot in the middle of the road, he headed downhill - right past us. Custer State Park, The Black Hills, South Dakota.
