Why do people have to be this lonely? What’s the point of it all? Millions of people in this world, all of them yearning, looking to others to satisfy them, yet isolating themselves. Why? Was the earth put here just to nourish human loneliness?

Heart Of The Matter

“You are not defiled by what you eat; you are defiled by what you say and do.” Mt. 15:11NLT

Back in the 1990’s I had a friend who wanted a husband. Telling her, ‘being desperate won’t give you anyone worth having,’ did no good. She found Mr Right-(Wrong).He even went to church. What kind of church was another story! They wouldn’t eat any foods forbidden by God’s Law. But  getting drunk and wife beating were quite fine. In fact, swapping spouses within the church, was a norm. How did this ‘church’ justify the blatant sins? By obedience to the food laws.

Let us establish something about clean and unclean foods right now. Within the books of the Law, God had a lot to say about the foods which were to be eaten or not eaten. Leviticus 11:9-12 rules out lobster, crab, etc. Science reveals shellfish contain mercury and other contaminates capable of making you very ill, or even killing you, (per SFGate Healthy Eating online). Certain parts of shellfish have to be removed before safe consumption. Since God made all the creatures, He knew what would or wouldn’t make you ill. Having no Google Images to show the Israelites what was or wasn’t harmful, it was much simpler to say, “…whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you” Deut. 14:10ESV. Today we know, pigs, (another unclean food), have to be thoroughly cooked because of a bacteria inside the meat. It was also called unclean by God.

Jesus set the record straight. Going straight into the ‘heart’ of the matter of actual sin, He wanted them to know were sin came from. “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes out of the body” Mt 15:17NLT. In other words, like the doctor talking to a toddler’s mother, ‘Don’t be scared. You’ll find that dime in his diaper in a day or two.’ Other than possibly getting sick from eating something, it couldn’t send anyone to hell. On the other hand: V18-19 instruct “But evil words come from an evil heart and defile the person who says them. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all other sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.”

Prov. 4:23KJV “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Jesus talked about an evil heart. Solomon explains the necessity to guard our hearts. Once a heart becomes polluted with porn, gambling, and other sins, pride sets in. Pride will erect a wall to keep the sins hidden, until the sins have built a stronghold in the mind.

I learned as a small child pulling weeds in the garden with Dad; pulling tiny, brand-new weeds is easier than pulling a weed with a root system. Keep the little sins pulled out of your heart the moment you notice them. Or you will grow a crop of sin large enough to control and defile you, right through your mouth. It’s your choice. You choose.

PRAYER: Papa God, It’s so easy to have sins overtake our hearts. Help us to keep puling the sins out of our hearts and not let sins defile us, in Jesus’ name I pray.
