Lots of problem solving as P5 transform their paper designs to the real thing. Will their designs create air resistance?

Some more families joined us to show off their multiplication skills using SAFMEDS tonight. Thanks to the families for taking time to come!

DE_CON 01 Material Sorting

Building off of the previous post, I wanted to discuss a bit about what went into the collection and sorting of the material harvested through the DE_CON 01 project and what we learned from this process. Back in December, the UDBS met at PROJECT RE_ to begin sorting through and quantifying the materials that had been deconstructed, transported, and stored there during DE_CON 01. Tasks varied throughout the day and an effort was made to begin imagining ways in which the materials could be reused in RE_CON 01 & 02. In order to catalog all of the materials, students were broken up into groups which were assigned to pallets and gaylords to sort. Materials were sorted for what was useful; de-nailed; cataloged in terms of size, quality, finish, and quantity; wrapped; then organized by material type into gaylords for storage. The gaylords and pallets were marked with ID numbers so that the material can be quickly located in the future. In order to begin understanding the quantity of material and its possible uses, it was crucial to go through the material and begin understanding not only what materials could be repurposed and where they could find a home in RE_CON, but also to comprehend the amount of labor that repurposing materials requires. Some material has to be lost based on its condition and how it was used previous to deconstruction. From wooden members that were part of joinery systems or had been firmly laminated, to unequal lengths of members and fractured pieces, these imperfections ultimately have a significant impact on the useful yield of the deconstruction and have been cataloged taking these factors into account so as to not overestimate the quantity of material that can be applied and designed with. This process has served to not only better understand what the process of deconstruction entails with more accurate data of how the material breakdowns turned out, but also to inform the design work on RE_CON 01 & 02.

If you embarrassed to make money online because of what your “friends” say or what your parents say..🔥

DO NOT listen to them😓

I made the same mistake & looking back, I could’ve been a millionaire right about now!

Just do yourself a favor & do WHAT YOU WANT!🗣🗣

Reflection last Week

Coding the Website

C A R

Context (part of a module)

Last week in Paula’s module we started to create our team Landing Page in the website.

Action

We started class at 9:00🕘 on last Thursday. At first we made our own GIF for our exhibition and then at 11:00🕚 we have a team discussion (how to make the design). We decided to use the code that we learned in Pete’s class and change it to something about our own exhibition.

Because before I modify my GIF in the paper and then scan to computer💻 I will feel the effect isn’t good so I drew another one in the tablet. Then I helped my teammate who wrote the code. If the code that I know I’ll just tell her how to change, if I won’t I would find the code what we need in w3schools and send it to her.

Reflection and planning…

I think it’s a good division of work cooperation, we make decisions quickly and the efficiency is high. I feel it very comfortable, because we have a good outcome and save a lot of time.

Plannings:

  • Complete my website
  • Improve my catalogue

SKILLS TEST! 🛠

Really working hard to build skills and confidence with our Year 10 D&T students to enable them to make informed choices when they get their NEA in June (already!!!).

As you know, we’ve been building skills over the year, such as creating different types of timber joints, using polymers in different ways, and using different tools and equipment. Today, the Skills Test gave a simple instruction and the students, relying on their teammates only, had to decide how best to approach the task to ensure a quality finish. They were great! I was asked only a few questions, none of which I gave direct answers to, but they completed the tasks and did them well too! At the end of the lesson, I asked if they had enjoyed it - answers came such as: ‘Yes Miss, I felt independent’, ‘I felt grown up’, ‘I liked working with my team’, etc. Perfect! Fingers crossed this will encourage their creativity and harness confidence and great working relationships…

Day 31 - Joining bamboo and brick

In the morning Christoph was introduced to the workers and warmly welcomed by them. Then the routine kicked in albeit in a reduced manner since the shortage in the supply of our main building materials - brick and bamboo - caused the major work in masonry to be seized and the preparations for more bamboo elements to be diminished to handling those which had already been delivered.

The toilet’s hand wash area was filled with dust and laterite stones and then paved. With this rather small operation done we are now ready to prepare the slab covering of the pits. The only thing missing for that is a few zinc sheets that will act as a permanent formwork.

Meanwhile the formwork was largely stripped before lunchtime to be cleaned and stored for the next stage of the concreting. The part of the ringbeam cantilevering above the ventilation blocks was left in its formwork to allow for more time that will strengthen the overall performance of the concrete as it dries.

Perhaps the key action today really was the moment when the first bamboo beam was fixed on top of its concrete supports in the learning areas. For that we mounted threaded rods into the wall with mortar that then acts as a pin for the beam. For that holes were drilled first in the bamboo and then in the wall.

In fact it was not an elaborate method per se but as it was the first of its kind it had a symbolic significance in any case.

Current emphasis on action learning stems from the interest in creating high performance work teams, building learning organizations, transforming corporate culture, and developing mechanisms for the encouragement of continuous learning. Action learning has been particularly effective in opening up communications channels and promoting new approaches to the solution of persistent organizational problems/issues. When engineered properly, action learning can produce major gains and help build organizational capacity for the longer term.
