Birthing Words

I want to be wrapped in happiness.

Taken away from this wreckage of bedsheets,

lain down on soft, meadowy grass,

clean and pure.

Hydrated and warm,

soft cotton dress wafting at my knees,

sunshine and smiles.

A peaceful soul, flowers and summer; that’s what i wish for for Christmas.

Writing this is like giving birth; I have to get it out.

Someone’s mum spoke about how that’s what writing poetry is like for her too.

It’s now that I realise we can be a mother to much more than children.

A woman can give birth to other forms of life other than humans, when a woman says she’s, “not having children,” it doesn’t mean she won’t give birth. It’s the same for any gender.

In writing this poem I felt pain and happiness. I felt the rush of what I can only imagine is a slither of the intense vivacity of struggle of birthing a child.

Humans are incredible.

My legs, although used less often than they used to can carry me when I need them to and for that I am grateful.

Substitute mothers made me. They were good, but never the Real Deal.

In the end and beginning I was my own mother- born from a shell of a person.

I learnt to adult in my own way before I could walk. Pride and sadness. I cry invisible tears with a smile on my face and people ask me if I’m okay.

The truth is, I’m not. No! Not really and won’t be for a long time. I get flashes of lightning-like happiness and just as quick it blows over.

I’ve stopped believing in Fairy Mothers and learned that Human Friends can get you a long way.

I’m hanging on, but only just. Somehow the fact that I’m hanging on is enough and not at the same time.

Prejudice, negativity, hate, pressure, lies, fakeness, stress, flashbacks and pain’s got me feeling like a grotesque performance artist that some sick people watch with glee.

Only my nose is above the water, people tell me it looks brilliant above the waves. I can only dream. And then they say, I’m at fault because someone else anchored me to the sea floor.

The people that can swim back to the shore can’t lower the waves but they can keep us anchored souls company and maybe feed us food and water if they can carry it.

I appreciate every contribution, to those that decorate my chains with fairy dust and bring me a buoy to sleep on.

Please, if you can I beg you, take care of the desperate and struggling. You never know what’s under the surface. To those that brave the swim, thank you.

Welcome Home - Barbara Howard ‎(On The Rise, 1969)

I take a deep breath, exhale and close my eyes.  My Muscles slowly start to relax.

Inhale, Exhale

I feel peaceful.

My body begins to sink into the bed, the restless thoughts faded away.

Inhale. Exhale.

I feel liberated.

My feet are in the sand, I feel each piece between my toes. I’m looking off into the sea of life, my reflection glows with each wave that comes crashing onto land. I look around to see if I’m alone- The calmness tells me that I have nothing to fear, I’m exactly where I need to be.

“It’s so beautiful, this place, wherever it is” - I say out loud, Then a warm breeze kisses my rosy cheeks and whispers, “This is your nirvana, this place has always been with you, this is your light”

I open my eyes to see life with this new vision, take a deep breath and smile.
