Blue Heron

Last summer I carved three linoleum block prints of backyard birds for a small art fair in my hometown, Syracuse, NY. You’ve probably seen me trying to sell them here. I still have some, if you’re interested.

However, I’m not here to sell those old bird prints. I’m here to sell these new bird prints, starting with this one of a Blue Heron searching for breakfast. Unlike the original prints I made last summer, which were so old-fashioned, being hand-carved out of rubber, these Blue Heron prints are will be made with a risograph printer. For those of you who aren’t familiar, risography is a type of printer that was developed a few decades ago that has resurfaced as a relatively inexpensive way for artists to create their own magazines, prints, and other paper goods. It combines the best aspects of both silk screening and digital printing.

For the last six months or so, I’ve been sending files to @authorizedtowork, a RISO print studio here in Brooklyn. So far, four of them have been scenes of New York City. Originally I had planned to continue making urban landscapes based off the works of Japanese print-maker Hasui Kawase, but this month I decided to switch gears a little and return to birds. It’s spring. They’re back!

I love birds, and I think they have a lot to teach humans about themselves. What I love most is how each species has its own unique personality. The Blue Heron, for instance, is a stately and noble bird. They are often seen alone, standing knee-deep in lakes and ponds, peering out into the mist and mystery of deeper waters. Captain Ahab comes to mind, though Blue Herons are less particular in subjects of their hunts. According to the Cornell Ornithology Lab, Great Blue Herons “eat nearly anything within striking distance, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other birds.”

Happy hunting, everyone.
