Citrus Fruit Review // Oroblanco

Hello and welcome to my first installment of Citrus fruit review.

I am going to test commercially available Citrus fruits I can find and will try to rate them on a scale of 1 to 5. Also It should be noted that I consider the Meyer Lemon 5/5 and the “standard” Lemon (Citrus Limon) as a 4.5/5.

This review is about the Oroblanco (Who guessed…)

This fruit is a hybrid between a Pomelo and a Grapefruit and is therfore quite large.

The fruit is ripe even while it’s still green and gets yellow as the season progresses.  Oroblancos are available from September through December.

The flesh has a pale reddish color, the fruit itself has a lot of white membranes, separating the fleshy segments. These should be discarded as they taste really bitter. 

The Flesh tastes similiar to a pomelo, but much more juicy and sweet, with a hint of zestiness. Definetly worth a try. Sadly I can not describe the taste of the rind. as the ones I bought got treated with wax. 

The juice however tastes like uncarbonated bitter lemon, so I used the juice to make a deviant Hot Toddy drink.

Here is how I mixed it:

  • Juice of 2 Oroblancos
  • Juice of 2 Oranges
  • Juice of 1 Lemon
  • Cinnamon
  • some Bourbon Vanilla

mix it it with hot water to any ratio you like (Its 1 part juice 3 parts hot water for me)

All in all: I think the Oroblanco deserves it trivia name Sweetie as it tastes like a sweet and juicier Pomelo, I would say it’s a 3/5 on the Andey Citrus scale (maybe some artwork of this the next time).
