Taurus. A beautiful zodiac constellation lying between Gemini and Aries, northwest of Orion. The myth claims that Taurus is a white bull, on which Europe swam the sea and got to Zeus on Crete. The sun enters the sign of Taurus on April 20, and the constellation - May 11.

The Pleiades (M 45) is often called the “Seven Sisters” - this is an amazing open cluster, one of the closest to us (a distance of 410 light years), containing approx. 500 stars, shrouded barely visible nebula. Nine of the brightest stars lying on a field with a diameter of just over 1 ?, named after titanium Atlanta, Oceanides Pleiona and their seven daughters: Alkiony, Asteropes, Mayas, Meropes, Taigeta, Keleno and Electra. The keen eye distinguishes in the Pleiades 6 or even 7 stars. Together they look like a little dipper. Such characteristic groups of stars that are not independent constellations are called asterisms: besides the Pleiades, for example, Orion’s Belt, Kovsh B. Medveditsy, etc. Observing the Pleiades through binoculars is an unspeakable pleasure.

Closer to us (c. 130 years old) is the open cluster of Hyades, containing 132 stars brighter than 9th magnitude and another 259 weaker possible members. According to one of the myths, the Hyades are the daughters of Atlanta and Ephra, which means they are half-sisters of the Pleiades.

On the eastern edge of Ghiad there is a bright orange star Aldebaran (? Taurus), which is not related to them, which in Arabic means “going after”; Nowadays it is often called the Ox-Eye. This is the 13th brightest star in the sky, its brightness varies from 0.78 to 0.93 magnitude; together with his companion - the red dwarf of the 13th magnitude - it is removed to 68 of St. years old.

The most famous astrophysical object in Taurus is the remnant of a supernova explosion in 1054. The Crab Nebula (M 1), located in the Milky Way, slightly more than 1? northwest of the star? Taurus; its apparent brilliance is 8.4 magnitude. This nebula is removed from us on 6300 sv. years old; its diameter is approx. 6 sv. years, and every day it increases by 80 million km. This is a powerful source of radio and X-rays. In the center of the Crab Nebula there is a tiny, but very hot blue asterisk of the 16th magnitude — this is a pulsar sending strictly periodic pulses of electromagnetic radiation; astronomers have proven it to be a neutron star.
