Should I post this with the Valencia or Inkwell filter?

Whether we have ordered from the new Asiatic restaurant in town or are ready to go on the night out to Union, we are always considering how we can be perceived in the photos shared. The best lighting, background, positioning and clarity of the photos that we take are so important and that’s before we even decide that they are ‘shareable’ to our friends. All of the images that we share online hold a meaning in their own situation and what we want others to witness - usually in order to make ourselves look better as trendy, stylish and outgoing people.

But are we subconsciously aiming to be perceived in a similar respect to those with status and fame? From a female perspective do we strive to ensure that our photos look similar to the likes of Kylie Jenner or Tammy Hembrow? Big bum, perfectly white teeth, effortlessly styled hair, eating the same foods, drinking the same drinks, wearing the same clothing lines, I could go on and on. Every photo or video that these celebrities post give us inspiration to make our posts appear similar. 

Everything we decide to post has a sub-contextual meaning and is done so to depict our lives in a specific light. It is clear that much of the time individuals, in particular the younger generations, aim to only be seen in their “best” representation and to appear as successful as the celebrities that inspire them.; But can an inspiration go too far? In my opinion many people try too hard to become like their ‘inspirations’ and instead simply become a dupe of the influencer, losing their individuality or personal uniqueness, when in fact naturally there is so much more to the person that everyone doesn’t get to see.

@bran.lt on Instagram is just one small example, in a giant collection of people on social media, posting images that will portray a successful self-image of themselves. He is suggesting his wealth, owning a BMW car and through his personal physical achievements, appearing built and in a good shape. But the profile he has on social media doesn’t show anything particularly individual about him. The photos have been, what I would term ‘engineered’, in order for him to have a profile that only shows a particular angle. By doing this we get a restricted view of the person and believe that this is the entirety of them. I’m sure there is a lot more to Bran Treace than gym, cars, clothing and tattoos, as his Instagram projects. 

I think it is so important to all of us to post the images or videos that we feel comfortable with to our online networks, however we should be careful not to be perceived as someone generic, a dupe or with limited typical interests. There is so much good and difference to all of us that should be shown as well as our interests. - We can still do/post these in our favourite filters!
