Is this bloodcurdling photo from Godhra, 2002? Find out

In election season, political parties and their supporters are pulling out all stops to attract voters. But there are a few, across the spectrum, who have begun to resort to unsavory means and spreading fake news to garner support.

Fake Godhra massacre photo
Fake Godhra massacre photo

A photo that is going viral on social media shows the charred corpses of people alleged to be the Hindus who were burnt alive inside a train in Godhra, 2002.

The posts accompanying the photo are also inflammatory and seek to exhort Hindus to not vote for the Congress. The posts claim that the Godhra massacre happened during the Congress regime and was allegedly orchestrated by Muslims, who are said to enjoy the patronage of the party.

However, the truth is that both the photo and the content of the posts are misleading and fake. The photo isn’t from Godhra, but from Congo in Africa. In 2010, 270 people were killed in a blaze in a Congo village when a truck carrying petrol overturned and exploded.

Another deviation from the truth is that during the Godhra train burning incident, it was the Bhartiya Janata Party that was in power in both the state (Gujarat) and at the Centre. Narendra Modi was the then chief minister of Gujarat, while Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister of India.

So, if you come across such inflammatory posts on social media, don’t trust them blindly. Put on your thinking caps before spreading them further and curb the propagation of fake news.

What about our 9/11's?

“Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 that we have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores.” - From President Obama’s speech

10 years. A commitment and resolve to bring justice for loss of it’s people. Salute to the world’s greatest country. Whatever it takes, it showed the cost of the life of it’s people is not cheap.

But what about the world’s largest democracy? Where is that commitment or resolve? Or has it written off it’s own citizens (forget even calling it’s own people)?

We had so many 9/11’s. But where are we on our Osama’s??

Let’s start with some of our Internal 9/11’s - Emergency and its excesses | 1984 Sikh Riots | Godhra riots | Parliament attack. And where we stand. We still love and respect dynasty responsible for one of them. We hail the other as a great Development Leader, India has ever produced. We don’t even need to wage a 10 year fight to find them. They are all here, right in the public eye. Only thing is we have closed our eyes to not see the obvious. No Apologies. No Shame. They roam among us with head held high and we are just being part of their scheme of things. Even if caught & indicted, they are enjoying life, before they get freed in exchange of a hijacked airplane. All because our President is too busy holidaying or opening CWG games, that don’t have time & resource to reject a mercy plea. And our legislatures too busy in mud-slinging, that they can’t change the rule of law to make an example out of this.

And now the ones where there is external dependency - Kashmir | Mumbai Blasts | 26/11. What we doing here. We are playing petty politics, making false promises. Neither disowning nor owning & embracing. Just happy being in the Proxy War and whining about it now & then. Time to learn. 10 years, but un-wavered commitment. We whine about the culprits being protected, not being extradited. But what we have done for the ones we got hold off. Feeding them, showing our hospitality. We get a gangster & his mole - nothing happens. We get a gun wielding terrorists - nothing happens. Time to learn. Execute and put in the sea. Neki kar aur dariya mein dal.

I also wish to go and shout India! India! when the day comes. Hope.
