MOONPIG: THEME EXPERIMENTATION

I wasn’t planning on having all of the cards look similar, apart from the obvious theme, but I think I want to keep the background half vector a running theme to help draw them together. Palm trees were the first trend I explored. Now I had a look at 90′s patterns which I thought resembled confetti quite well, so I decided that this should be one of the birthday themes.

I also want to include acronyms and other modern, funny sayings, as seen in ‘hbd’, ‘lit’ and ‘xo’.

MOONPIG BRIEF 2017

The brief to create a range for moonpig caught me at the pitch. With a more illustrative style myself, I thought this was the perfect opportunity for an easier display of that skill.

Whilst looking through moonpig’s cards, and taking into consideration the information given at the presentation. Their bestsellers usually include personalisation and own photo insertion,so I want to incorporate that. However, I noticed that on a lot of these cards, the photos seem very out-of-place and don’t mesh with the illustrative style of the cards. I want to do something that helps the card come together as one piece. Also, whilst their new branding is extremely modern, I didn’t think that this was shown in a lot of the designs they sell. I know this is because they sell a wide range of cards to many people, but most likely an older age. I want to make something that is very modern but would still appeal to parents.

I think that the perfect way to do this would be to use a Polaroid design for personalisation (photo and text). Instagram is the biggest photo-sharing network right now and has it’s own aesthetic which I can draw inspiration from, which is also based on Polaroid photography which has made a comeback of its own, most likely with the rise of Instagram. I’ll use my own illustration style, the filter-hype and the Polaroid itself to create minimalistic, modern and fun designs.

On a developmental level, the cards could also be expanded to ecards with animations, drawing from instagrams own ‘story’ feature - especially boomerangs (3 second long reversed videos) which are still growing in popularity.
