Here’s a video demonstration of my previous post on how to setup your shoulders for the bench press.

The focus should be on Scapula Retraction and Depression (Back and Down).
👉This will set you up with the optimal position to bench press safely and more effectively.
-
Many of my coaching clients are able to retract their shoulder blades but find it difficult to push them down.
A popular coaching cue used to teach this is ‘Bend The Bar’. This cue also teaches you to tuck your elbows while you bench.
-
In the video clips above, you can see that after I pull my shoulders back, it almost seems like I’m trying to bend the barbell. Even though you can’t really bend the barbell (unless you’re the hulk) it puts your shoulders and elbows in the perfect position to bench.

Here’s a demonstration of my bench press Bar path post from a couple weeks ago.

I’m finishing up my video guide on how to bench press properly and thought this would make a cool post.
-
The bench press starts and ends with the barbell directly over your shoulders. When you bring it down to your chest, it is no longer over your shoulders.
In order to finish the press efficiently, you have to press Up AND Back, not just Up.
