Police arrest head of $2.7M Ugandan cryptocurrency scam

It had duped thousands of individuals

By THE NEXT WEB

Police have arrested one of the directors of a cryptocurrency startup in Uganda that closed suddenly and made off with investors‘ money.

A Mr Samson Lwanga, director of Dunamiscoins Resources Limited, was arrested last week and should appear in court later this week, local news reports.

It’s reported that the scam managed to con 10 billion Ugandan shillings ($2.7 million) out of victims.

The authorities are still on the look out for the other four directors of the company.

Like numerous other cryptocurrency-based scams, Dunamiscoins promised investors and employees large returns in a short space of time. However, after a month, the company shut down its offices, leaving investors in the lurch and employees out of work — many of whom were yet to even start their job.

“We have already opened a general inquiry file and investigations are going on. We recorded statements from the complainants and arrested one of the directors called Samson Lwanga who is currently detained at Old Kampala Police Station,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the police spokesperson, Mr Lwanga is willing to refund money to investors, but he can’t because their accounts have been frozen. The police are investigating if this is true.

At the time of Hard Fork’s first report on the scam, it was unclear how many people had been affected by Dunamiscoins.

However, in Daily Monitor’s latest update, it seems the scam is bigger than first reported. And the story sounds all too familiar.

Investors were encouraged to get their friends and family to participate, only to find out later that they had all been duped

According to the report, at least 1,000 people had registered with the cryptocurrency startup, however, some victims have said the number of people involved is closer to 10,000.

Dunamiscoins reportedly began operating in March, and was paying out to early investors. It came crashing down last week when its offices shut and phone lines were disconnected. http://dlvr.it/RL1TBQ

Body organs of Ugandan killed in Turkey missing

In Case You Missed It MLN - If you read all the way to the bottom, you are going to find out how much money you can sell your organs for.

Sharif Sentoogo, alias Madi, 20, who died in Turkey on November 3, was found with missing body organs following a postmortem at Kampala Capital City Authority mortuary.

As a result, Sentoogo’s father, Swaibu Kamya, has filed a case with the International Police (Interpol) in Kampala, in which he is seeking justice.

According to Kamya, his son is likely to have been a victim of organ trade, after his brain, heart, liver, and kidneys were found missing.

“I suspect this was a planned move-in which my son’s organs were harvested before he died. His body had been cut and sewn back with no organs,” Kamya noted.

Suspect arrested

Sunday Vision has learned that Kamya’s case has been referred to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) after it emerged that one of the suspects linked to the harvesting of Sentoogo’s body organs is in Kampala.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Kawempe Police station, but she was later released on Police bond.

The Police case is registered as SD 03/20/11/2019.

According to a medical certificate of cause of death, signed by Dr. Richard Ambayo, Sentoogo died in Turkey, but the cause of his death was “not established.”

The report from the Kampala Capital City Authority mortuary, dated November 28, says the date of Sentoogo’s death is unknown.

Background

Sentoogo was hit on the head by a Nigerian, only identified as Bullet, on November 3, during a bar brawl in Istanbul, Turkey, before he died at Samatya Education and

Research Hospital.

Witnesses say it all started when Bullet, the owner of Afro Istanbul Club, asked one of his workers, identified as Fat, to stay behind because she had reportedly broken a chair.

Sentoogo is said to have intervened because Fat, a fellow Ugandan, was his girlfriend and that they were supposed to retire home together.

In the ensuing exchange, the Nigerian boss hit Sentoogo with a whiskey bottle and he collapsed.

Bar bouncers reportedly held Sentoogo for the Nigerian boss to hit him again, twice on the head, before he blacked out.

They allegedly locked him in one of the rooms, but later, one of the bouncers took Sentoogo back to his room, which is near the bar. He later slipped into a coma and was

put on life support, before being pronounced brain dead.

Sentoogo’s body was flown back to Uganda last week and was buried at his ancestral home in Butuntumula, Luwero district. It is said the Nigerian community in Turkey fundraised to clear the hospital bills and flight fares.

“The doctors said the young man was brain dead but his organs were still functioning. Organs trade is a very lucrative business here,” a source, in Turkey, revealed.

According to the source, Turkish police arrested Fat, the Nigerian boss, and the bouncers. But they were all later released.

According to sources in Turkey, the incident happened during a show, where two Ugandan musicians; Nina Roz and Rodney Y Kabakko, performed. Sentoogo was

in Istanbul, Turkey doing kyeyo (odd jobs).

COMMENTS:

[12-09, 9:20 a.m.] Martha Leah Nangalama: Where is the link please? Thanks. But the story is very typical organ trade though. PRICES:

Kidney $50,000 each
Liver $250,000
Heart $500,000
Eyes $25,000 each
Brain $1m (if it has MLN’s IQ).

A healthy Uganda youth is worth $25,000 to a trafficker but worth $1,000,000 for organ harvesting.

And some parents pay $5,000 to send their kids to be killed and sold off in body parts?

EMITWE EGYO!

Garvin’s new novel A Dredging in Swann is an interesting book that rounds out its characters in a small town in North Carolina.  The first couple of chapters are quite staccato but it finds its flow after this point to immense the reader into the workings of this small town.

Lulling the reader into the quiet surrounds of Swann County, we are introduced to a murder that has a more complex reasoning than first envisioned.  Written in the third person, the story jumps back and forth from Seb Creek, the everyman detective who has a military background and Cody, a man with a troubled past.  What starts out as a straight forward murder mystery intertwines itself with the life of Cody extremely successfully.

The characters are very well balanced and drawn given a three dimensional approach.  Garner has an incredible talent of making these characters varied in their emotional approach which lifts them up beyond the page.  The second and third tier characters have the same emotional depth as the main characters and long after reading the book, they do stay with you for quite some time.

The plot is very complexed but easy to get into.  The juxtaposition between the murder of Leo to the theft of missiles is very well handled and it takes a mastermind to be able to pull this off effectively which Garner does with aplomb.  The plot becomes tangled the more we get into the novel but in the final third, it is pure enjoyment as these get untangled to give a realistic approach to the solving of the crime which sets this apart from most novels of this ilk.

Overall, this is an fascinating read that keeps the reader involved.  I enjoyed learning about the Venus flytrapping, the small town life and the military approach to the proceedings.  The murder mystery of the aspect has a life of its own as we have to uncover the past to work out the present.  I haven’t read the other books in this series and Garner is meticulous to ensure the reader can get just involved and invested without having prior knowledge.  This is an incredible book and one that is enjoyable, involving and entertaining without losing its focus.  Highly recommended.
