3/2 - I suck at making content

In this day and age, the one thing that I have noticed that people want to be is a content creator. I think that’s pretty phenomenal, honestly. The idea that you can now make money off of your ideas, opinions and stupid life hacks that involve excessive amounts of hot glue or even using duct tape to fashion yourself a hammock. I am no exception to this. Not one bit.

I am apart of the generation that grew up watching YouTubers like Jenna Marbles and Shane Dawson. The idea that you can still enjoy your life, but dedicate time and effort to making videos and actually live off of the ad revenue that comes from it, is still mind boggling to me. I always wanted to be that person. I always wanted to make content and interact with various people through platforms like YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr etc. I like making content. I love making blog posts, updating my social media with corny jokes and all that good stuff.

Content creation, at a glance, looks to be something that is fairly simple. Post every week. Update your social media. Done. I think what has put me off for so long, is that I know it’s a lot more than that. Say that maybe Jenna Marbles ONLY posted to her YouTube channel, and we took away the fact that she does a podcast, twitch stream and a gaming channel. Let’s say she only posted to her primary channel. She would only have to shoot edit and upload one video, after of course, spending time coming up with new concepts for said video. That video alone will gain a lot of traffic because Jenna has a large following and her videos tend to be trending.

If you want to make it on a platform as a content creator, you have to build a solid foundation of content. If you create one post a week, that may not kick off your platform very well. The fact of the matter is, getting to a solid place with your content takes a lot of effort. You will have to constantly be creating content, updating your status, posting a video, updating your story, you get the point. You have to keep making your content relevant.

You need a solid foundation of content for your audience to scroll through and enjoy. This is what gains followers. One post will not show a user that you align with the kind of content you like to see and does not show that you are regularly updating your platforms, so there is not guarantee that you are active on said platform. I think of content creation, like a portfolio. You can’t show up to a job that requires you show your previous works without a portfolio of some kind. If you expect success, you have to show something for it.

That’s also where I get stuck. What the heck am I going to create?

I live an uninteresting life. Sometimes I think the only reason I talk so much is because I like to hear the sound of my own voice. All I really do is work, go to school and eat excessive amounts of chicken wings and refer to everything I eat as “dirty keto”. Whatever that means. In fact, the only reason I started going to school again was because I had too much time on my hands.

Things are changing a lot for me though. I don’t see it all the time, but they are. I’m in a serious relationship. I’m looking into owning property. I’m cooking for once in my life, and really getting out of my comfort zone. I’m making so many strides and I feel like now is the time. If I am going to make content, write a dumb blog, and act like I’m special, I have to do it now.

Also I need another reason to procrastinate. And I know my grammar is atrocious. I went to public school.

Brand Reflection #3   

   I am here to bring light to one of my favorite experiential marketing campaigns done by the San Jose Sharks. For roughly the seventh time, this professional hockey team held their See The Puck promotion. The promotion, active last Sunday on February 10, is dedicated to loyal Sharks fans and takes these people for an adventure. Essentially, 500 hockey pucks are scattered throughout the Bay Area at locations the Sharks have partnerships with. You must download the Sharks app to follow clues and these pucks have a QR code that you scan and register your name under. With this QR code you score free tickets to a Sharks game as well as a Barracuda game, the Sharks developmental league affiliate. There’s even chances to win signed jerseys!

    This scavenger hunt is a great way to engage fans and grow the number of users for their app. The 500 pucks were all claimed relatively quickly after the 9am start. I personally was unable to participate this year since I was not in San Jose, but I know a number of friends who did. One in particular said he would have never tried the Sharks app without this scavenger hunt even though he watches their games religiously. When downloading the app was associated with free tickets and the possibility of winning a signed jersey, there was no hesitation. The app was downloaded just like that and now that he has it, he realized how useful and entertaining the app is. I imagine it is similar with many other fans: an app dedicated solely to one team/arena may not seem worth the storage but once incentivized to add and put it in use, the desire to continue to use it spikes.

    The success of this promotion has not come without many failures and the need to adapt. Previous mistakes included:

  • Small quantity of pucks
  • People would leave pucks after already claiming prize
  • Not held in many cities
  • It was confusing how to participate

    The Sharks marketing team was quick to implement changes in order to fix the bugs. The number of pucks has increased to 500 over multiple cities in the Bay Area even as far as San Francisco in 2018. Next, they created a “how to” guide in order to explain the hunt and switched from a code written on the back to a QR code making it easier for fans to claim their prize. Lastly, Sharks faculty monitor the pucks are more strict about taking them with you after you have claimed the prize so people are not given false hope.

    I love experiential marketing (and yes, especially when it’s paired with a team I hold near and dear to my heart). The idea of really engaging people with your brand through an experience makes everything more personable than seeing something on a screen. The Sharks have improved upon their promotion and continue to successfully promote their app and the overall experience of being a Sharks fan.
