My 2 Cents On Coding

Start with HTML. I know it’s grey and I know it’s boring but it provides a solid foundational base upon which all other things can be built.

CoderDojo Week 2

Week two of the new CoderDojo saw us continuing with the Shark Game we started building last week. This was somewhat of a more difficult venture for the kids. Personally I thought the instructions were not written in the best format but we all got on with it.

In this installment the kids were required to duplicated the fish from Week 1. Extra code was needed for adding points or deleting points from a score variable depending on the type of fish eaten by the shark.

A timer variable was also included to limit the gameplay time. Honestly I believe this was a little bit advanced for a few of the younger kids. As a mentor I was trying to assist others and noticed that some concepts were hard to grasp. One example would be the “show” block; it’s inclusion required because we had inserted the “hide” block for the shark and fish when the timer ran out. The kids just assumed the shark would reappear when the program was started again. I found this to be noteworthy - a point of programming that may need to be explained further to the Dojo Kids.

We did have a few episodes of frustration throughout the hour because of the dreaded bugs! Again, interesting to observe how different kids dealt with the issues that arose. There was frustration and anger with some whereas others took their time as we worked through the code together.

Again I found the teamwork to be a great positive among the kids and parents. There is a learning process with programming and coding. I believe this is just something the kids will have to work through. We’ll get there! Everyone is still learning!
