The pursuit of happiness, for most people, is exactly this: a lifelong project to feel good as often as possible, a project that has very little to do with the nature of reality. It is the root of anxiety, depression, and certainly addiction.




When something bad-feeling happens, it causes pain. But if you add onto that experience thoughts about how terrible it is, it gets even worse. Do you notice? Do the obsessive thoughts about what should or shouldn’t be help anything?







When someone asks, “How are you?” we reflexively look to the content of our current experience to find the answer. So how are you, in the context of your entire life? Where do you look? Is who you are a product of your experience today?




I know what you’re thinking: “If I accept everything as it is, then I’ll lose all control and direction in my life!” to which I would respond, “Can you be absolutely sure that’s true? Have you tried it?”




You’ve been conditioned to believe that a life of squeezing things in, multi-tasking, and over-commitment will bring you fulfillment. How’s that working for you so far?




With just a little bit of inquiry, it’s easy to find this isn’t true. They know enough. They’re good enough. They are just not comfortable with being uncomfortable with new things.




Here’s the truth: Business is not a democracy, and that necessity of being a benevolent dictator in a position of power takes great responsibility.




Today, we’re going to learn how you can apply this as a manager of others and yourself, including a brief discussion on the origin of all mediocrity in the world and how you’re probably enabling it.










Learn your lessons now, or life may give you another chance to get it. I wouldn’t trade my rock bottom for the world, because it taught me so much. Do you relate this way to your worst experiences? The things that “happened” to you?
