February Birthstone - Amethyst

   by Kristian Krawford

The most popular variety of quartz, amethyst is the birthstone for those born in February as well as the gem for 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries. Found in many countries around the globe, the gem is not valued for its rarity, but for its color. Ranging from pale lilac to a deep, intense purple, the darker varieties are the most dazzling and most sought-after.

In ancient times, it was believed that the stone promoted sobriety and would even negate the affects of alcohol consumption. In fact, it gets its name from “amethystos,” a Greek word meaning “not being inebriated.” Long associated with royalty and the affluent class, it was also revered by the early Christian church and is even mentioned in the Bible. It is one of the precious stones in the breastplate of the high priest (Exodus 28:19; 39:12) and in the foundation of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:20).

It’s a relatively hard, durable gem and is used in all sorts of jewelry, both simple and ornate. Generally heat-treated to achieve darker shades, the effects are both beautiful and permanent. Color is the major factor in the gems’ value, with dark colors more desired. And eye-clean amethysts with no visible color-zoning are worth the most. The pale lilac versions are soothing and pretty. No wonder they are thought to reflect contentment! And since these pastel amethysts are easy on the pocket, they are an obvious choice for some jewelry buyers.

Amethysts are cut into a variety of shapes. Many standard shapes are requested, but they are also often cut into free-hand shapes to create one-of-a-kind pieces that are very expensive. Due to the abundant availability of amethysts—even those in large sizes—the value of the stone is not dependent on carat weight. Instead, it is all the gorgeous shades of deep purple that influence the stone’s worth.

December Birthstone - Tanzanite

   by Kristian Krawford

If you’re a December baby, then Tanzanite is your birthstone. This rare gem was only recently discovered, 1967 in fact, in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. One thousand times rarer than diamonds, geologists believe this dazzling blue gem cannot be found anywhere else on earth. Its formation millions of years ago was equally uncommon. So uncommon that the odds of it happening again are practically impossible. Today, it’s the second most sought-after blue gem. Sapphire is the first.

Tanzanite is pleochroic, meaning it appears to change colors when viewed from different angles. It is a delicate gem—easily chipped or broken and sensitive to rapid temperature changes. The naturally blue color is enhanced by heat treatments in most. However, the naturally vibrant untreated ones are extremely sought-after and held in high regard among jewelry collectors and enthusiasts.

They are versatile and rare and a must-have for any jewelry buyer seeking rarity. Those with deep saturation are the most valued and color is of the utmost importance in value. Tanzanites are often eye-clean (free from visible inclusions) and thus, a large, flawless stone is considered most valuable. Because Tanzanites are pleochroic, various cuts showcasing certain colors are popular. But those cuts that exhibit the deep blue saturation are seen most often. Such as oval and cushion. The finest colors are usually seen in the largest stones, which makes color and carat weight the most important things to consider when purchasing.

The December birthstone offers beauty, rarity and distinction. It is prized for its kaleidoscopic colors and thought to bring good luck and prosperity. The fluidity of its shifting colors are also thought to improve one’s mental state. For these reasons, it’s one of the most intriguing and popular gemstones today.

BYGONE BELIEFS: BEING A SERIES OF EXCURSIONS IN THE BYWAYS OF THOUGHT BY HERBERT STANLEY REDGROVE B.Sc. (Lond.) F.C.S. LONDON
WILLIAM RIDER & SON, LTD 1920

I’m liking how the author was bringing up the matter of birthstones and correspondences and how those seem to change over time, for a variety of reasons.  And that angular rendering of the Abracadabra talisman.  I could have used one or two of those during all my pagan festival years for near the tent.

Wait a hot minute!

When did birthstones change?

I just got a planner that has a zodiac signs and birthstones page(because I guess planners need that now, I don’t know, maybe to help people pick out birthday presents). And I just realized that the stone for Taurus isn’t the emerald anymore. When did it switch to diamond? Gemini apparently has the emerald now.

When did this happen?

I mean, I don’t follow astrology, but as someone growing up being constantly told my birthstone was the emerald, I’m just shocked and confused.

Top 5 Birth Stones.

Frankly speaking, I had no idea what the hell a birthstone is. So my answer solely relies on what Google told me.

1 | Sapphire (September)
A rich blue - that colour represents not only the sea but also my Hogwarts house. So this has to be my favourite, hasn’t it?

2 | Emerald (May)
This is my literal birth stone. The colour makes me think of Ireland, traveling, music and my secret second Hogwarts house.

3 | Aquamarine (March)
Another stone with a colour reminding me of the sea. This time not the deep and stormy sea, but rather a calm sea at a sunny day. Not my favourite, but still beautiful.

4 | Garnet (January)
A rich bloody red. It means autumn and coziness for me. It’s the colour of tomato sauce, too. Who wouldn’t love something that looks like tomato sauce?

5 | Amethyst (February)
Purple is just one of my favourite colours ever. That’s all.
