Repost @travelisthenewclub How amazing is the #Gambia religious ritual, called the Zangbeto? In it, the central mythological figure is from the Jola people in Gambia. The Kumpo mask is made out of dried palm leaves and cover the dancer from head to toe.
In a trance, the Zangbeto are said to evoke a power that inhabited the earth long before the appearance of man and provide a source of wisdom and continuity for the people of Benin. /

The last survivor of a slave ship has been identified, and her story is remarkable.
New research suggests that Redoshi, who became a free woman in 1865, may have been the last living survivor of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

She was captured at about the age of 12 in West Africa and forced aboard the Clotilda, the last slave vessel to arrive in the United States in 1860.

Now researchers have identified Redoshi as the last known African-born survivor of the transatlantic slave trade when she died in 1937, according to a statement released Tuesday by Newcastle University in Great Britain. Renamed Sally Smith in Alabama, she may have been 110 years old at the time of her death. [x]

Egúngún masquerades strengthen connections between the living and their ancestors in West African Yorùbá communities. In The Egungun Project, Beninese photographer Leonce Raphael Agbodjélou (b. 1965) depicts contemporary masqueraders showing off their magnificent costumes. Colorful perspectives on the Republic of Benin’s heritage and culture, these formally posed photos reflect Agbodjélou’s training under his father, renowned studio portrait photographer Joseph Moise Agbodjélou.

Curious what egúngún looks like in a different part of West Africa? Visit One: Egúngún  on view through August 18, 2019.

Benin’s Court is looking for Olori UTP Ladipo of Benin. She is aged 25-30 and is human.

All she’s ever wanted was to see her family and people stand strong. She was loved and gave that love back, but in her own way. Never as expressive as her little sister, she felt sure that she’d make the best of things. Marrying for duty was how she could help her sister, her family, her people. But even she can only take so much, struggling to come to terms with how isolating marriage has been.

Her opinion on the treaty is UTP, but she will help her sister unite Benin.

Connections:

Eze Okafor: she’s always been close to him, both sharing a similar temperament. Like her father, she is capable of ruling but knows when to step aside, like she encourages him to do now, for her sister’s sake.

Adaeze Okafor: her sister has always been her best friend. She saw how much more suited her little sister was for a life as a ruler, even from a young age, and never once sought it out. Instead, she’s done everything she can to help her prepare for the day she holds power, even after marrying.

Omoba Ladipo: she married with the hope of holding a position that would ensure the peace between Igbo and Yoruba would last, but she never expected to suffer the embarrassment of being openly cheated on. It stings, but her pride is strong enough to keep her from taking her revenge.

She also has connections to the court of Benin. She is an Igbo person by birth but married into the Yoruba people

Benin’s Court is looking for Omoba UTP Ladipo of Benin. She is aged 20-30 and is human.

She always knew her brother would rule, far better at both diplomacy and fighting, and she didn’t mind. It provided her a freedom she craved. Her head full of dreams, she’s always been a charming young lady, but as she grew older, her hope of falling in love started to backfire. Convinced she was in love with every person who flirted back with her, only to end up with her heart inevitably broken, she’s not giving up hope yet.

Her opinion on the treaty is UTP, but she will find love.

Connections:

Oba Ladipo: she knows her father doesn’t approve of her constant chase for love. They’re constantly arguing about it, especially now that they’re in Atlantis and she’s flirting with people outside Benin.

Omoba Ladipo: considering her own hope of romance, she’s his firmest supporter of his relationship with another man. She wants what he has, someone to make her feel complete.

Abaya Ladipo: there is no one she admires more than her mother. She’s seen the strength of running a household, seen the love it takes, and she wants to hold a similar position.

She also has connections to the court of Benin. She is an Yoruba person by birth.

Suggested fcs include: Letita Wright, Lashana Lynch, Ebonee Noel
