In elementary school, I was always taught to use I-statements whenever I was upset. Instead of “you hurt me,” the form was “I felt hurt when you did this to me because…”

I’ve always prided myself at using I-statements. I’m the kind of person who can take undue criticism, file it away to process later, and in the meantime turn around and offer that person thanks and support. I’m really good at removing my emotions from a situation because I know that, more often than not, showing how someone has impacted me won’t help in that conversation.

But you know what? I don’t much care for that I-statement form anymore. If you hurt me, I shouldn’t have to flip it around to give myself agency. YOU hurt me. There’s no I there. Take responsibility for your actions and I’ll take responsibility for mine.

And in the meantime, I’ll keep my guard up.
